Compliance with industry standards provides your product offerings a marketing edge. Many standards development organizations provide standards applicable to the electronics industry. Including standards for a particular market in your standards library helps to assure your credibility. Staying current with standards from the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) helps to maintain credibility and ensure market position with the global information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

Since TIA is accredited by the American Nation Standards Institute (ANSI), you can be confident that TIA standards offer widely-accepted and technically-accurate information. At the international level, TIA participates in standards-development activities with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The TIA standards cover a wide spectrum of topics, including:

  • antennas
  • cellular systems
  • cordless
  • phones
  • data interchange transmission equipment
  • emergency systems (E-911)
  • facsimile equipment
  • fiber optics
  • land mobile communications
  • mobile phones
  • modems
  • personal communications services (PCS)
  • private network telephony
  • satellite
  • surveillance
  • telephones/terminal equipment
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet protocol)
  • wiring/cabling

To facilitate standards review and purchase by professionals in the electronics industry, TIA standards are grouped by topic. IHS offers the following collections of TIA standards:

Point-to-Point Communications Systems: standards and recommended practices related to terrestrial fixed point-to-point radio communications equipment and systems (microwave radio)

Multimedia Access, Protocols, and Interfaces: standards covering multimedia access, protocol, and interface topics relevant to communications equipment engineers and manufacturers

Satellite Equipment and Systems: standards for space-borne and terrestrial hardware; interfaces on standards for satellite and terrestrial systems; and the efficient use of spectrum and orbital resources, including sharing between satellite and terrestrial services

User Premises Telecommunications Requirements: standards cover performance and interface criteria for equipment, systems and private networks

Telecommunications Cabling Systems: standards cover requirements for copper and optical fiber cabling components (such as cables, connectors and cable assemblies), installation, and field testing

Mobile and Personal Communications Systems Standards: cover wireless terminal equipment, wireless base station and switching office equipment, ancillary apparatus, inter-network and intersystem operations, interfaces, and wireless packet data technologies-many of these standards are joint standards with the Electronics Industries Association (EIA)

Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia Multicast: downlink standards for a subclass of terrestrial mobile multimedia multicast (TM3) systems

Mobile and Personal Private Radio Standards: cover private radio communications systems and equipment for both voice and data applications including emergency communications

TIA's 2009 ICT Market Review & Forecast may also provide electronics companies with useful information about ICT markets. This comprehensive telecommunications market report provides critical data to help guide your decisions about key ICT markets and trends for the coming years.

IHS offers flexible purchase options. To assure that your company gets the right information in a format that works for how you operate, TIA standards from IHS are available as online subscriptions or individual documents. Online documents are updated daily. Online subscribers get secure online access to search, view, bookmark, track, and print documents according to the license agreement. Multiple users can share a single license. You also get access to IHS Standards bibliographic data - more than 1 million documents.

Technology, regulations, and economics change the information and telecommunications technology markets on a frequent basis. Don't be caught out of the loop when it comes to your customers' needs. Keep your TIA standards current!
