Scope:
The EIA-600 specification covers:
The overall topology of the EIA-600
network and the detailed topology for each individual medium
used.
The electrical and physical specifications for the media usable
by EIA-600.
The physical interface from a device to the medium and the
signaling method specifications to be used on the medium.
The protocol to be used for network access and the description
of the control message format.
A command language that allows all devices to communicate a
common set of functions to be performed.
Aspects of the overall EIA-600 network
that are not addressed in this specification are operation and
maintenance of the network.
This standard establishes a minimal set of rules for compliance.
It does not rule out extended services that may be provided, as
long as the rules of this standard are adhered to within the
system. It is, in fact, the intention of the standard to permit
extended services (defined by users) to coexist.
