Scope:
The purpose of this clause is to guide the reader in understanding the nature of surges that can enter the power plant premises via transmission and distribution lines and to indicate methods to reduce their magnitudes. Overvoltage surges resulting from lightning strokes and line switching may stress the insulation of power plant equipment, circuits, and systems. This provides information for evaluating line conditions as they affect the surges that may enter the switchyard and power plant.
