The
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) published a primer on its
IEEE 802.3ah-2004 - Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) standard.
Ethernet in the First Mile: Access for Everyone was written to provide information on the Ethernet and the EFM standard and provide guidance in selecting different types of Ethernet technology.
The book also is a resource for those who want to build equipment compatible with the EFM standard.
The 480-page volume examines the EFM standard, which makes Ethernet the foundation for broadband subscriber access networks in the link between the Internet and users.
Since nearly all Internet traffic begins and ends in devices attached to networks via Ethernet, it is highly efficient for such networks to carry Ethernet traffic in its native format at all points.
The book explains the basic principles underlying the standard, as well as its scope and technology tracks. It offers information on subjects such as interoperability and testing and describes typical business cases and considerations for deploying EFM.
