Companies of all sizes and types are finding that radio-frequency identification (RFID) tools can provide business benefits within and beyond supply chains, according to Aberdeen Group.

According to Aberdeen, these companies are pursuing leverage of RFID-generated data to improve the business value of numerous applications, from business intelligence and analytics to customer relationship management.

The study surveyed more than 200 IT and business decision makers at enterprises across multiple market and business segments.

The survey found that top respondents are:

  • More than 1.3 times as likely as industry average and more than 3.4 times as likely as other respondents to have the ability to craft effective RFID service level agreements (SLAs).

  • More than 1.5 times as likely as industry average and more than 2.9 times as likely as other respondents to have consolidated, integrated RFID performance monitoring in place.

  • More than 1.4 times as likely as industry average and more than 1.9 times as likely as other respondents to have in place middleware or other tools for integration of RFID-generated data.

The survey also found that top companies enjoyed business benefits as a result of these efforts and investments. According to the research, such companies achieved an average:

  • 19.8% year-over-year increase in user satisfaction.
  • 9.1% year-over-year increase in employee productivity.
  • 1.0% year-over-year decrease in overall infrastructure costs.
  • 7.9% year-over-year decrease in time to information for operational/line-of-business applications.

"RFID is helping best-in-class companies to improve user satisfaction, employee productivity and availability of business-critical information, within and beyond supply chains," said Michael Dortch, senior research analyst, Aberdeen.

"These and other benefits make now the time for business and technology decision makers to identify and pursue opportunities to use RFID to improve competitive agility while reducing losses, costs and noncompliance with regulations and industry mandates," he said.

The report offers recommendations for companies to achieve top levels of performance with RFID, through integrated, business-driven management of RFID deployments, key applications, information resources and IT infrastructures.
