The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published NEMA ANSI C136.20-2008 - Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment - Fiber-Reinforced Composite (FRC) Lighting Poles and NEMA ANSI C136-36B-2008 - Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment - Concrete Lighting Poles.

According to Rick Sprowls, chairman of the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) 136 that prepared both standards, NEMA ANSI C136.20 is an updated version of a previously rescinded standard.

"ANSI C136.20 includes nomenclature, dimensional data, performance criteria, and some interchangeability features for standard poles as well as those that must meet breakaway requirements for poles," said Sprowls.

"ANSI C136-36B is a new standard that applies to concrete lighting poles used in roadway and area lighting equipment and includes nomenclature, performance criteria, marking and recordkeeping requirements, and certain minimal material needs. It does not cover concrete poles manufactured with any modified concrete mix incorporating the use of polymers or other modifiers."
