ATIS Asks FCC to Consider Existing Standards for Nat'l Broadband Plan

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) filed comments with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission related to the national broadband plan.
In its comments, ATIS said that the national broadband plan should remain knowledgeable of and reflect the industry's existing and evolving technical standards and solutions that support current and future broadband infrastructure, networks and devices.
To realize widespread broadband adoption, the plan should allow technical issues to be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the industry's consensus-based work, according to ATIS.
Two committees were cited by ATIS as working toward enabling broadband technologies.
The ATIS Network Interface Power and Protection (NIPP) committee is focused on the next generation of the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) passive optical network (PON) standards, which will increase the bandwidth of fiber-to-the-home customers to 10 Gbps while maintaining compatibility to existing optical access systems.
The ATIS Optical Transport and Synchronization Committee (OPTXS) is investigating the impact of new services to existing broadband capabilities, as well as developing new high-speed transport technology of 100 Gbps and above.
"The national broadband plan is an important and laudable initiative," said Susan Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "In order to realize the plan's full potential, policymakers should consider those technical standards that make possible current and future widespread broadband deployment."
