The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will develop two standards projects in the power electronics field - IEEE P1798 and IEEE P1799.

The first project, IEEE P1798 - Guide for Qualification and Type Tests for Partial Discharge (PD) - Free Electrical Insulation Systems Used in Rotating Electrical Machines Fed from Voltage Converters, will adopt International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60034-18-41.

This will be the first IEEE standard recommending methods for assessing the insulation system of stator/rotor windings subjected to pulse width modulation drives, according to IEEE.

The second standard, IEEE P1799 - Recommended Practice for Quality Control Testing of External Discharges on Form-Wound Coils, Roëbel Bars, Vacuum Pressure Impregnated Stator Insulation and Fully Assembled Stator Windings, will provide a procedure to detect external discharges in form-wound bars and coils and complete stator windings of rotating machines operating in air with a rated line-to-line voltage greater than 4200 volts at power frequency.

The recommended practice will suggest sample preparation, test parameters and procedures for detecting external discharges in bars, coils and complete stator windings using the above mentioned methods. It will also recommend acceptance criteria and a procedure for a retest in the event of a test failure.

Both standards are sponsored by the Electric Machinery Committee of the IEEE Power & Energy Society.

IEEE also launched a revision of IEEE P1215 - Guide for the Application of Separable Insulated Connectors. This revision will address changes made to separable connectors since the last issue of the standard and will also expand on existing topics.

This guide will be used by utility engineers, contractors and linemen for both educational and operational purposes.
