IEEE to Revise Software Life Cycle Reuse Standard - IEEE P1517

According to IEEE, the project will match IEEE P1517 with the scope and substance of IEEE 12207 - Standard for Information Technology-Software Life Cycle Processes, which was revised in 2008.

The scope of the specified processes in IEEE P1517 is broader than that of IEEE 12207 because reuse activities transcend the life cycle of any particular system. The specified processes are suitable on an organization-wide basis, according to IEEE.

IEEE also began work to adopt three standards:

• IEEE P1490 - Guide - Adoption of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Standard - A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) - 2008 (4th edition).
  The standard documents the information needed to initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control and close a single project and identifies those project management processes that were recognized as good practice on most projects, most of the time. As part of the adoption process, the IEEE Computer Society's Software & Systems Engineering Standards Committee will identify what IEEE standards are recommended for managing projects.
• IEEE P14102 - Adoption of ISO/IEC 14102:2008 Information Technology - Guideline for the Evaluation and Selection of CASE Tools.
  This standard establishes processes and activities to be applied for the evaluation of CASE tools and selecting the most appropriate CASE tools from several candidates.
• IEEE P14471 - Adoption of Guide ISO/IEC TR14471 Information Technology - Software Engineering - Guidelines for the Adoption of CASE Tools.
  This standard addresses the adoption practices appropriate for a range of computing organizations.
