The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published a standard based on Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) device architecture and device protocols, according to the UPnP Forum.

ISO/IEC 29341-13-11:2008(E) offers a user interface for administration of access control on security-aware UPnP devices. The series of ISO/IEC 29341 publications defines architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of appliances, wireless devices and PCs.

Building on this momentum, the UPnP Forum released UPnP Device Architecture Version 1.1 (UDA 1.1), an enhancement of the architectural elements used to define protocols for communication between controllers or control points and devices.

UDA 1.1, which is a backward-compatible update to UDA 1.0, adds a number of extensions, including:

  • Support for a full range of eXtensible Markup Language schema data types to provide more protocol design options.
  • Multicast event notifications to reduce network traffic.
  • Improved robustness of device discovery on wireless networks.
  • Improved performance and scalability on large networks.
  • Compliance with RFC 3927 (the Internet Engineering Task Force standard for automatic Internet protocol (IP) address assignment), Simple Object Access Protocol 1.1 and the Web Services Interoperability Organization basic profile.
  • IP version 6 (IPv6) support built directly into the UPnP device architecture, which clarifies operation of devices that support multiple IP addresses including both IPv4 and IPv6.

The UPnP Forum also completed updates to its audio video and quality of service device control protocols and services.

In 2009, the UPnP Forum will develop protocols for telephony devices and remote access.
