The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published ANSI C18.1M, Part 1-2009 Portable Primary Cells and Batteries with Aqueous Electrolyte, providing general requirements and information for consumer batteries.
The standard outlines specifications for nomenclature, dimensions, polarity, terminals, marking, test conditions and procedures.
ANSI C18.M was last revised in 2005. Revisions for the 2009 version include a new chemical system, new tests for popular consumer batteries and reformatted battery specification sheets.
"ANSI C18.1M, Part 1 aims to ensure interchangeability of products from different manufacturers; minimize proliferation of cell and battery types; define performance standards; and provide guidance to consumers, manufacturers, and designers," said Steven Wicelinski, C18-1 chair.
The standard was produced by the ANSI C18 committee on Portable Cells and Batteries, and was last revised in 2005.
