The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released the fifth edition of IEC 60947-1 for low-voltage switchgear and control gear for rated voltages not exceeding 1000 volts alternating current (AC) or 1500 volts direct current (DC).
The fifth edition replaces the fourth edition, which was published in 2004.
The key changes to this standard are the significant changes to Clause 7.1 on "Constructional requirements" and the inclusion of new material to support electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests, said the IEC.
In addition, there are new normative annexes covering environmental tests and on digital inputs/output for compatibility with programmable controllers and an informative annex on dielectric testing.
IEC 60947-1 aims to harmonize rules and requirements of a general nature applicable to low-voltage switchgear and control gear.
In this way, manufacturers and users will avoid the need for testing to different standards, said the IEC. IEC 60947-1 does not apply to low-voltage switchgear and control gear assemblies, which are addressed in IEC 60439.
IEC 60947-1 sets out general rules and requirements, which are common to low-voltage equipment including:
- Definitions.
- Characteristics.
- Information supplied with the equipment.
- Normal service, mounting and transport conditions.
- Constructional and performance requirements.
- Verification of characteristics and performance.
