The widespread use of universal serial bus (USB) flash drives and other personal storage devices has raised concerns about the security of information in many organizations.

A new Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) standard addresses this issue by defining methods for authenticating transient storage devices when they are mounted to host computers in corporate, government, academic and other environments.

The standard, IEEE 1667 - Standard Protocol for Authentication in Host Attachments of Transient Storage Devices, defines uniform methods to validate identifiers and other steps.

It was created within the IEEE Corporate Standards Program.

IEEE 1667 gives enterprises a way to implement USB flash drives using uniform authentication methods.

It was developed to foster the continued use of these devices, which offer a convenient way to transport information in the work place and at home.
