Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) introduced the Puma 5 family of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.0-based cable modem chipsets to support Cable Laboratories Inc. (CableLabs) DOCSIS 3.0 testing in Certification Wave 56.
New DOCSIS 3.0 features, such as channel bonding, are touted as enabling ultra high downstream bandwidth rates of 160 Mbps in the residential data and voice services configuration and 320 Mbps in video and business services configuration, according to TI.
In addition, TI's Puma 5 is designed to support quality of service (QoS) with Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and security with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), said TI.
The Puma 5 architecture includes a multimedia processor and routing accelerator along with a digital signal processor (DSP)-based voice subsystem and a set of local area network (LAN) interfaces.
The routing accelerator is billed as providing line rate bridging and routing capabilities and enables QoS guarantees for voice traffic even in the presence of very high data packet throughput, claims TI.
The architecture supports four upstream and four downstream channels (4 x 4) and is extendable to eight downstream channels and four upstream channels (8 x 4) to support next generation Internet Protocol (IP) services.
In addition, Puma 5 is designed to contain a high-speed sampling engine that enables a single tuner to be used for four channel operation.
The Puma family includes the TNETC4800, TNETC4810 and TNETC4830.
The TNETC4800 is designed to support embedded multimedia terminal adapter (EMTA) applications and includes a battery backup subsystem.
The TNETC4810 is also optimized for EMTA applications without battery backup, said TI. The TNET4830 is optimized for data cable modem applications.
The EMTA solutions incorporate a DSP to enable voice capabilities and support up to four channels of wireline or wireless voice.
